Oldest pub in Belfast

"Whites Tavern" in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a historic gem and is considered the oldest pub in the city, with origins dating back to 1630. Located in a picturesque cobbled alley that was once frequented by wine and spirits merchants, the venue has developed over the centuries into an essential part of Belfast’s culinary scene. Today, "Whites Tavern" consists of several areas, including the traditional tavern, the Whites Garden, the Whites Beer Hall, and the Whites Store – each with its unique character, yet all united by a love for Irish hospitality. It is a place that breathes history while offering modern comforts, attracting a diverse audience – from tourists to locals to music lovers.

Traditional Irish pub cuisine

Culinarily, "Whites Tavern" stands for classic Irish pub cuisine with a modern twist, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Noteworthy is the Irish Stew, a hearty dish made with tender lamb, potatoes, and vegetables, slowly cooked in a rich broth – a true comfort food that warms the soul. Equally popular is the Sunday Roast, served with juicy meat, crispy roast potatoes, and homemade Yorkshire pudding, considered one of the best in the city. The fresh oysters from the Oyster Room are another highlight – perfectly chilled and served with a squeeze of lemon, offering a taste of the sea that delights connoisseurs. For those with a sweet tooth, there is the Baked Alaska, a dessert of airy meringue and creamy ice cream, impressing with its sweet warmth. The drink selection is equally impressive, focusing on Guinness, served here as a creamy masterpiece, along with a wide range of local beers and seasonal cocktails.

The ambiance of "Whites Tavern" is layered and inviting. The original tavern on the ground floor captivates with its rustic charm – low ceilings, dark wood, and an open turf fire create a cozy, almost timeless atmosphere reminiscent of past centuries. The Whites Garden, an extension from 2020, offers an open outdoor area with a retractable roof, providing a botanical oasis in the heart of the city, perfect for relaxed drinks on warm days. The Whites Beer Hall adds a modern touch, featuring large screens for sports broadcasts and a lively atmosphere, while the Whites Store, as Ireland's first dedicated Guinness bar, creates an intimate space for lovers of the black gold. Live music, ranging from traditional Irish tunes to local bands, enlivens the evenings, making the tavern a cultural meeting point.

The service is often described as warm and attentive, with staff – including notable names like Dylan and Simona – remaining friendly even during busy times. Particularly on weekends or holidays, it can get crowded, but the team ensures that guests feel welcome, even if there are occasional slight delays. The restaurant prides itself on its versatility: it accommodates cozy evenings by the fireplace, lively sports broadcasts, or private celebrations on the upper floor. The dog-friendly policy and proximity to nature also make it attractive for day-trippers exploring Belfast.

We visited as part of a 60th birthday celebration. Yulia was amazing, made us incredible cocktails all afternoon and went out of her way to suggest other things we might like. We are now addicted to a Clover Club! Thank you so much for being so lovely x

Whites is a great traditional Belfast bar with an atmosphere that matches. It can be very busy at times as it is a popular venue. The only reason for my three star service rating is because when its busy it really needs to have more staff serving behind the bar! It is a good spot for all ages but if you want a seat get in early 😉

Great place for lunch in Belfast with that old world charm. Service is spot on and food is great. This is a very popular spot so if you haven't booked don't be disappointed if you can't get a table. If there is a downside, and I'm just being picky, the music through the speakers is quite loud and intrusive at times.

The real deal. Best pub we went to in Belfast. Impressive food too. The beef cheeeks were tender, the fish and chips fluffy. Would recommend a visit. Oldest tavern in Belfast.

It's a great place, a nice atmosphere. Very cosy and has an irish pub charm. We visited this place for the company's christmas party. The food was good, mostly traditional. I am vegetarian, so there were decent items for vegetarians. Drinks on offer is just like any typical irish pub. Visit recommended if you like proper snug old irish pub.

Came here with my BIL and family. They had a Guinness while enjoying the rustic old pub. Great music, fantastic space and really cool decor all over. This is basically how I imagine the 1800s looking like. Really cool. The staff was lovely too!

Whites is a great pub. I opted to frequent Whites Tavern with a friend visiting from Scotland. We enjoyed copious amounts of stout in a warm and friendly atmosphere—thoroughly enjoyed it! They also have a dedicated Guinness bar, which I’ve been to before—it’s definitely worth checking out if you love a good pint. Certainly a great spot to visit if you’re in Belfast for a short break. Just be aware, the Guinness is on the pricey side.
